Bioactive peptides in ME/CFS: the link between inflammatory and neurological disturbances

ME/CFS is a complex, serious multi-system disease. Patients with ME/CFS suffer from inflammation-related, vascular and neurological complaints. This may indicate the involvement of bioactive peptides that have potent effects on these different systems. In this project we investigate how these peptides are involved in the disease process of patients with ME/CFS. To achieve this goal, we measure these peptides and inflammatory values in patients with the most severe complaints (e.g. extreme exercise intolerance), because this is where the strongest signals are expected and where the greatest gains can be achieved. We measure these patients at home, because they rarely come to the hospital. By involving these patients with serious complaints in the study, we can better understand the disease process of ME/CFS and hopefully treat it with medications that are now used in other diseases with similar underlying mechanisms.
